The Bolshoi Theatre is one of the most famous brands in Russia. In the West, the word Bolshoi does not need to be translated. Now it seems that it has always been like this. Not at all. For many years, the Mariinsky was considered the main musical theater of the empire, and Moscow was "theatrical Siberia": guilty artists were exiled there from St. Petersburg and dilapidated decorations were fused. The situation changed dramatically by the end of the nineteenth century. Thanks to the efforts of patrons - the Moscow merchant dynasties - a flourishing, largely alternative culture to St. Petersburg was created, rooted in long-standing Slavophile traditions. The Big One also soared on the crest of this wave. Fyodor Chaliapin, Leonid Sobinov, Antonina Nejdanova, and Sergei Rachmaninov shone in it. But the first post-revolutionary years became the most difficult in the history of the Bolshoi: Lenin, with fanatical insistence, sought to close the theater.
