Wooden icon "George the Victorious"

The famous icon of St. George the Victorious is loved and revered in the Christian world.

George was born in 276 in Belit (now Beirut in Lebanon). The holy martyr was tortured and then put to death by order of the pagan emperor Diocletian. When the persecution of Christians began, despite his high rank and successful military career, he did not renounce his faith in the Lord. And he remained a devoted servant of God to the end, not fearing torment and a terrible death.

The oldest icons of St. George the Victorious depict him as a martyr, a fighter for the faith. It was for this that the Lord endowed him with wonderful opportunities. The most famous case of their use was the victory over the serpent, which happened after the death of the martyr. Later, icon painters began to depict this particular event.
