The history of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is more than two thousand years old. According to legend, the icon was painted by the Evangelist Luke on a board from the table where the Savior was having a meal with the Most Pure Mother and the righteous Joseph. In 1131, the icon was donated to Grand Duke Mstislav of Byzantium. Later, the icon of the Virgin was moved to Vladimir, where she became the patroness of the city. It was then that the name "Vladimirskaya" was assigned to her. It is believed that the icon of the Mother of God repeatedly saved Russia in times of danger and trials, helping in the most difficult situations with her care and patronage.

The icon depicts the Mother of God affectionately hugging the Baby Jesus. The Vladimir icon differs from other icons of this type in that the baby's left leg is bent in a special way and her foot is visible to us. The image of the Most Holy Theotokos conveys deep maternal feelings, closeness and love between Mother and Son, symbolizing the Mother of God's care for all believers.
