The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is the earliest and one of the most revered miraculous icons of the Russian Orthodox Church. According to legend, this icon was painted by the holy apostle and Evangelist Luke on a board from the table at which the Savior ate with His Most Pure Mother and righteous Joseph. Iconographically, the Vladimir icon belongs to the type of "Eleus", which means "Tenderness" in Greek. The Christ child pressed his cheek to the cheek of the Most Holy Theotokos.
