St. George the Victorious is a Christian saint, a great martyr. He came from a noble Cappadocian family, was a courageous warrior and suffered for Christ during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian in Nicomedia. One of his posthumous miracles is widely known — getting rid of a dragon-like snake of the inhabitants of a small village in Syria. Pagans offered human sacrifices to the monster, and the daughter of the local ruler was supposed to be such a victim. George's victory over the monster not only saved the life of the doomed princess, but also converted the villagers to Christ and became one of the most striking symbols of the victory of God's truth over the forces of evil. The appearance of the first canonical image of St. George dates back to the 9th century. The icon, which depicts a saint on a horse, piercing a snake with a spear, is located in Greece, in the monastery of Xenophon. The head and sword of St. George are kept under the main altar in the Roman Basilica of San Giorgio in Velabro. The relics of the Great Martyr George the Victorious, his right hand, are kept in a silver shrine on Mount Athos.
