Arachnophobia is a special kinetic sculpture for people expecting the unexpected. Something unique, something that everyone will remember when they see it on the table or on the wall. It is a work of art designed to shock, awaken and inspire people, rather than obey the rules.

Invented by MB&F and designed and manufactured by the L'Epée 1839 manufactory, the Arachnophobia model is the result of the stormy imagination of MB&F founder Maximilian Busser, combined with his love of art. Arachnophobia was inspired by a giant sculpture of a spider named Maman, which Busser saw both in Geneva and in Doha. Maman (mother in French) was created by Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) from bronze, stainless steel and marble. The monumental sculpture measuring 9.27 x 8.91 x 10.24 meters (over 30 x 33 feet) has been installed in a variety of locations around the world.

Arachnophobia is available in two colors: yellow gold and black, which requires two different metals for the legs. The gold-colored model has legs made of gilded brass, and the legs of the black version are made of hand-crafted aluminum and coated with black lacquer.

"All the finishing is done by the hands of master finishers who polish, satin, polish, and then, depending on the version, cover or varnish the legs," says Arnaud Nicolas, General Director of L'Epée 1839." Finishing techniques used on the "case" and legs of the watch include corner polishing, mirror polishing, satin finishing, circular satin finishing, sandblasting and polishing. 

To really make a statement, L'Epée has also developed a system that allows you to hang arachnophobia on the wall. The innovative latch under the mechanism is attached to a stainless steel wall bracket.

"Creating this watch was an adventure; it's the first time we've gone this far in design," explains Arnaud Nicolas. "In fact, the watch was made in two steps. The first was the spider itself, and the second happened in the middle of the meeting, when I was introducing him and holding the spider in my hand against the wall. I was explaining how incredible this new watch was when the idea came to me to hang it on the wall."

L'Epée 1839, together with Max Busser, developed a very unusual concept, using its know-how in watchmaking to create a mechanism in the form of a mechanical head and torso of a spider. The case is equipped with a black dome with white numbers representing hours and minutes. The self-sufficiency of the araneae watch is admirable, because the beautifully polished, well-visible mechanism boasts an eight-day power reserve.

Important mechanical processes take place at both ends of the arachnophobia abdomen, which displays time: At the head is a regulator with an oscillating balance wheel (and a set of jaws in case he gets hungry at night), and at the other end is a mainspring drum, which drives the movement. Eight visually attractive legs are attached to the abdomen, articulated at the junction with the body. The legs can be rotated so that the Arachnophobe can stand on a table or spread out for wall mounting.

Although "Arachnophobia" is not as large as the sculpture that inspired it, 405 mm in diameter with fully extended legs or hanging on the wall, it is certainly large enough to make a real impression.
