Japan.: The second half of the XIX century. – Mm. Papier-mache, rice paper, embossing, lacquer painting, wood. It is made in the technique of "dry cord".
Inside, each of the boxes is covered with rice paper with floral ornaments. There are scuffs on the bottom of all four caskets, indicating the use of the kit. At the bottom of the stand is a CHRISTIE'S branded auction sticker with a profile picture of James Christie and the inscription: "COLLECTION / Yves Saint Laurent / et / Pierre Berge /vente 5595 / n de lot: 45/2 / CHRISTIE'S PIERRE / en association Berge / & Associates".
The set consists of a wooden tray and four caskets. The tray and the lid of each box in the center are decorated with a diamond-shaped pattern, which contains its own card suit: spades, clubs, diamonds, hearts (The set was presumably intended for playing bridge). The sides of the lid are decorated with an elegant floral pattern in the Art Deco style, using stained glass paints of red, green and white colors and decorated with a thin golden frame. We observe the same pattern on the curly part of the tray. Inside, each box is covered with yellow rice paper with floral ornaments.
Provenance: The casket was bought at an auction held by Pierre Berger in conjunction with Christie's, November 20, 2009, lot 45, page 31 in the Christie's catalog.
Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berger began to collect their collection in 1958. Over five decades, it has included more than 700 pieces of art: paintings, drawings and graphics by artists of the XIX-XX centuries, Art Deco interior items, monuments of the ancient world and much more. After the couturier's death in June 2008, Pierre Berger immediately decided to sell the collection, as "without Yves Saint Laurent, it lost its appeal for him.
