The Psalter, or Book of Psalms, is one of the biblical books of the Old Testament. The book consists of 150 songs and psalms that contain the pious outpourings of an enthusiastic heart or various trials of life. The author of this book is usually considered to be King David, and, indeed, in many psalms one can find echoes of his stormy, full of all sorts of vicissitudes of life. But at the same time, many psalms bear obvious traces of later origin. In general, the Psalter is a poetic collection that grew gradually, like any collective poetic work.
