The Antiquities of the Russian State, a serious scientific work, a kind of catalog of monuments of Russian history, was published in Moscow during 1849-1853. The publication consisted of albums, which included over 500 sheets of color chromolithographs of Russian cultural monuments and notebooks of text printed material.

His birth was connected with the development of the so-called "artistic archeology" in the 19th century, the founder of which is considered to be the artist F. Solntseva. On the instructions of the President of the Academy of Arts, A.N. Olenin, since 1830, for more than twenty years, he made numerous trips to ancient Russian cities, monasteries and churches, where he carefully recorded historical and cultural monuments.

The result of this activity was a huge legacy - more than five thousand colorful watercolors and drawings, some of which were included in the "Antiquities of the Russian State." Among them are items from the Patriarchal Sacristy of the Moscow Kremlin, the Kremlin Assumption Cathedral, temples and monasteries of Novgorod and other cities that have not been preserved to this day. For the first time in our country, a work of such volume and significance, telling about the history of pre-Petrine Russia, is being republished in full.

The publication includes not only wonderful illustrations by the famous artist F. Solntseva (more than 500), but also articles of equal value to them, written in excellent pictorial language by such outstanding writers as A. Veltman, known to the domestic reader and viewer thanks to the novel and the TV movie of the same name "Salome", M. Zagoskin, I. Snegirev and others.

This book will be an excellent guide for history teachers, theater and cinema figures, as well as for a wide range of readers. The publication is especially relevant at the present time, when interest in Russian history is as high as ever. Since the originals of F. Solntsev's drawings had to be collected bit by bit, it would be practically impossible to carry out such an edition in the future.
