About this product

Mikhail Bulgakov is a Russian writer of the Soviet period, playwright, theater director and actor. He was the author of novels, novellas and short stories, plays, screenplays, and many feuilletons in the 1920s. The creator of the brilliant novels "The Master and Margarita", "The White Guard", "The Heart of a Dog".

The presented exhibit is the first printed book by the famous writer and the first edition. The copy is the first and only collection of Bulgakov's short stories and novellas "Diaboliad" in the USSR, the edition was republished only at the end of March 1926. After 1926, the works of M.A. Bulgakov were not published in the USSR during his lifetime.

The book includes the novels "Diaboliada", "Fatal Eggs", "The Adventures of Chichikov" and the stories "No. 13. House of Elpit Rabkomunna" and "Chinese History".

An unknown story is connected with the publication of the first edition of Bulgakov's book. For a long time it was believed that the books had been seized, but modern researchers agree that, despite public criticism, the circulation was sold out. In 1926, the publisher N. Angarsky planned to publish a separate book "Fatal Eggs", but, without obtaining permission for it, he made a second printing of the book "Diaboliad", containing the novel "Fatal Eggs". The seizures of books began after 1928, when a letter of instruction was sent under the signature of Nadezhda Krupskaya to the Head of the Political Department: "Works, even significant in terms of literary skill, conducting moods of disbelief in the creative possibilities of the revolution, moods of social pessimism, should be withdrawn from small libraries. For example, M.A. Bulgakov. Following the libraries, the book began to be withdrawn from free trade, and during arrests and searches from private libraries.

The beginning of Bulgakov's literary activity is associated with the writer's final move to Moscow in September 1921 and a break with his former medical practice. Bulgakov began to write feuilletons and short stories, publishing in magazines of the new Soviet Russia and the press of the Russian emigration. In the autumn of 1923, Mikhail Bulgakov met Nikolai Angarsky, the head of the Nedra magazine and the publishing house of the same name. Their collaboration lasted a little less than three years — until the spring of 1926, but it was Angarsky who became the main publisher of Bulgakov's works in his "literary" fifth anniversary.
