Henry Kissinger is an American statesman, diplomat and expert in the field of international relations. U.S. National Security Advisor (1969-1975) and U.S. Secretary of State (1973-1977).
President Richard Nixon appointed Kissinger to head the National Security Council. Kissinger held this post from January 1969 to November 1975, and from September 1973 he was also Secretary of State. This is the only time in the history of the United States when one person held two of these positions at the same time.
Kissinger retained the post of Secretary of State under Gerald Ford (1974-1977). All these years, he has played a dominant role in U.S. foreign policy. Many diplomatic steps are associated with his name, including the initiative to pursue a policy of detente, which resulted in a significant easing of tension in Soviet-American relations and a decrease in the intensity of confrontation between socialist and capitalist countries. One of the elements of this policy was the negotiations on the limitation of strategic arms, which led to the signing of the American-Soviet strategic arms limitation and missile defense treaties in 1972, as well as a number of agreements on bilateral cooperation in non-military spheres.
