Boris Nikolaevich Yeltsin is a Soviet and Russian party leader, statesman and politician. The first president of the Russian Federation (1991-1999); in November 1991 — June 1992, he simultaneously headed the "government of reformers". From March to May 1992, he served as the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation.

Member of the CPSU (1961-1990), member of the Central Committee of the CPSU (1981-1990); in the party he held the posts of first secretary of the Sverdlovsk Regional Committee of the CPSU (1976-1985), Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU (1985-1986) and first secretary of the Moscow City Committee of the CPSU (1985-1987).
He went down in history as the first popularly elected head of Russia, a radical reformer of the socio-political and economic structure of Russia. Yeltsin's reign was marked by price liberalization, privatization, impeachment attempts in 1993 and 1999, the crackdown on the Supreme Soviet and the adoption of the 1993 Constitution, the first Chechen War (1994-1996), and default in 1998.
