Skylab 1 is the first and only national orbital station in the USA. Now little is known about Skylab, although this station is in many ways unique and interesting, since it was on it that the first space riot in history took place, and the station itself surpassed the Soviet stations of that time – Salyut and Almaz.
The first American manned orbital laboratory was launched by the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 14, 1973. Already on February 8, 1974, the station was abandoned, and on July 11, 1979, it collapsed to the Ground in Kalgoorlie, Australia.
The Stargift collection features a rare preserved fragment of the station, which was found by Bill Norton, Larry Hotstone and Peter Ralph at Rawlinna Ranch in Western Australia. The orbiting laboratory burned down at an altitude of 434 km, falling at a speed of 27,000 km/h, reaching a temperature of 1,260 degrees Celsius. In six years of its existence in orbit, it has traveled 1,500,000,000 km and circled the Earth 34,981 times. The project cost the creators 2.6 billion dollars.
