The ruble was first mentioned in the Birch Bark Charter of Veliky Novgorod (1281-1299). In the thirteenth century, silver ingots weighing about two hundred grams were used as money on the territory of Kievan Rus. They were called hryvnia. Such a solid coin was not a very convenient means of payment, so it began to be cut into pieces, the parts began to be called rubles.
