Anatoly Karpov is a Soviet and Russian chess player and politician, the 12th world chess champion, international grandmaster, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR.
Mikhail Botvinnik is a Soviet and Russian chess grandmaster, winner of five world champion titles in three different periods. The sixth world chess champion, he also worked as an electrical engineer and computer scientist and was a pioneer in computer chess.
Tigran Petrosyan is a Soviet chess player, 9th world champion from 1963 to 1969, and an international grandmaster. Nine-time winner of the chess Olympiads as a member of the USSR team. Ten times in a row (from 1953 to 1980) he played in candidates competitions and in World Championship matches, including twice as the reigning world champion. Some sources call him the most difficult-to-beat player in the history of chess.
Vasily Smyslov is a Soviet and Russian chess player, world chess champion in 1957 and 1958. He is considered one of the greatest chess players in history, known for his unique style of play and talent as a strategist. Smyslov was known for his victories over such chess players as Botvinnik, Tal and Fischer. His method was characterized by a deep understanding of the game and the ability to come up with the most incredible moves.
Isaac Linder is a Soviet and Russian chess historian and writer. He is the author of over 400 works on the issues of Russian and foreign chess culture: history, archeology, ethnography, aesthetics, creativity of famous Russian and foreign masters of the XIX – early XX centuries, international chess relations.
