Charles Aznavour is a French chansonnier, composer, poet, writer and actor of Armenian descent. Aznavour wrote about 1300 songs, played in 60 films and sold more than 200 million CDs.
Charles Aznavour did not like being called a "living legend". But if you try to determine the place that this miniature Frenchman of Armenian origin occupies in the world musical culture, you can't say it more accurately. There are countless facets of his creative nature — poet, composer, writer, screenwriter, actor, director. And yet, in the minds of many, he is primarily a performer of his own songs, the most prominent representative of the French chanson. At the turn of the century, according to the results of an international Internet vote, Charles Aznavour was named in the top three singers along with Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan.
Charles Aznavour's parents emigrated to France, to a place that was supposed to be only a temporary shelter before moving to America, while they were getting a visa. The family of the future legend loved France so much that they decided to stay here and there was no question of leaving for the USA. The father of the future French chanson star Misha Aznavourian opened a cozy restaurant, frequented by Russian and Armenian immigrants. Aznavour's grandfather, who previously served as a chef for the governor of Tiflis, conjured in the restaurant kitchen. Numerous visitors were attracted by the amazing atmosphere of this place, imbued with the spirit of creativity, which the Aznavourians were able to create.
Aznavour's father was a professional singer in the past and in the evenings in the restaurant you could often hear his beautiful velvety baritone. My mother studied at an acting school in her youth. It is not surprising that with such parents, Charles's artistic debut took place quite early — at the age of five, the boy was already delighting the audience by playing the violin.
