A document with handwritten notes, an address and autographs

Nikolai Pilyugin is a prominent Soviet scientist, designer, and associate of S.P. Korolev. Nikolai Alekseevich developed autonomous systems for ballistic missiles, the first satellites and rockets.

Nikolai Pilyugin was a member of the legendary Council of Chief Designers of Rocket and Space Technology, which was headed by S.P. Korolev.

It is worth noting that Pilyugin remained virtually unknown to a wide audience, since the main results of his work, development and research were strictly classified.

The fact is that when in 1944 an unusual military training ground was captured in liberated Poland, where fragments of a new, top—secret German weapon were discovered, it was Pilyugin who had to study this missile. The goal was to reproduce the appearance of this German missile from the wreckage — we are talking about the V-2 ballistic missile.

Comrade Pilyugin, B.E. Chertok recalled how Nikolai Alekseevich, "armed only with a screwdriver, struggled over some device, then beamed and enthusiastically explained the principle of operation of the gyroscopic device, which turned out to be an acceleration integrator to turn off the rocket engine." Further in the memoirs, it is noted that Pilyugin and his staff "managed to reliably reproduce the appearance of the German rocket on the whole."

Colleagues of Nikolai Alekseevich also noted that during the formation of rocket technology, Pilyugin, developing fundamental new systems, paid great attention to reliability problems. This can be understood from the document presented in the Stargift collection — it was thoroughly reported on all the details, measures taken to prevent deviations of products from technical specifications, etc.

There is a note on the document: "I ask you to coordinate with S.N. Korolev and prepare a decision of the military—industrial complex."

The document was signed by Nikolai Pilyugin, chief Designer, Nikolai Nikolaevich Kuznetsov, head of the department at the Main Directorate of Missile Armament, I. Rakovsky, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR for Automation and Mechanical Engineering.

The text of the document:

"During the launch of the Leninskaya Iskra plants of VLO products for the period from September 1961 to May 1962, there were cases of deviations of these products from certain technical conditions and their acceptance was carried out with the permission of the chief designer of the organization p/p 2427. NIAI and the Leninskaya Iskra plant developed and implemented a number of measures to eliminate most of the causes non-compliance of products with the requirements of technical specifications, including a new design and technology of the heating element has been developed and implemented in order to ensure the tightness of the filling device, a new rubber ampoule has been developed and implemented, providing an 8-year shelf life, HDPE welding on polyamide parts has been introduced in order to ensure reliable performance, design changes have been made and the production technology of many parts has been changed and nodes that improve the design of products."

"However, there are still cases of undervoltage of VL068 products with a discharge current of 180 and 160 V. To urgently ensure the refinement of products VL068, VL069, VL000 to fully meet the requirements of technical specifications, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR for Automation and Mechanical Engineering approved the work plan of NIAI, carried out jointly with the Leninskaya Iskra plant and LFNIIRNa, for which a special group of NIAI employees, relieved of all other duties, was allocated for the duration of illness ch. Product designer VL058 , VL063, VL00 t . Kotousova S.G. Orders on NIAI according to chap. The designer of these products has been appointed Candidate of Technical Sciences T. Arkhangelskaya."

On the next page of the document :

"During the development work, according to the approved plan, the causes of voltage reduction during battery discharge were established and measures were identified to ensure full compliance of products with technical conditions.

At the same time, the implementation of these measures is possible only after the development, manufacture and testing of new small-sized automatic equipment mounted inside VLO products, which will take at least 6 months. Considering the above, as well as the urgent need to provide organizations exporting these products to Russia, I ask you:

  1. To coordinate the attached protocol from the end of 1962 with Changes to technical specifications No. 000358049 on the product VL068, VL069, VL099.
  2. To instruct VP No. 1626- IO to accept the specified products according to specifications No. 000358043 by the end of 1962, taking into account the protocol of changes.
  3. As a special exception, it is allowed to accept and ship 12 sets of VL068, VL069 and VL099 products manufactured in April this year according to the actual electrical characteristics of the VL068 product No. T24004-21, given in the letter of the Leninskaya Iskra plant dated May 29 this year No. 2633."
