About this product
Art. : 021-2768

Checkers is an ancient logical board game for two players, which consists in moving checkers chips in a certain way through the cells of the board. During the game, each player owns checkers of the same color: dark or light. The goal of the game is to take all the opponent's checkers or deprive them of the opportunity to move (lock). There are several variants of checkers. These classic Russian checkers are made in the amount of 24 elements, and are dedicated to the legendary battle of the Patriotic War of 1812 – the Battle of Borodino on September 7, 1812 (fr. Bataille de la Moskova).

The checkers board is made in the form of a casket for storing game elements. The case body is made of solid Wenge wood. The playing field is made of veneer, which has excellent shockproof characteristics, and the silver figures do not damage it. The casket is upholstered with velvet from the inside, with soft beds for checkers. The finished product is delivered in a shipping box.

Light draughts pieces (12 elements) — the Russian army. The obverse of each chip depicts warriors going on the attack against the background of St. Basil's Cathedral, as a symbol of Moscow. The reverse and the edge are decorated with the emblem of the Russian Imperial Army.

Dark checkers pieces (12 elements) — The French army (at the time of the invasion of Russia, consisting of about half of the ethnic French). The obverse of each chip depicts soldiers of the Empire going on the attack against the background of the Arc de Triomphe of Paris (a symbol of the victory of Napoleon's troops in the Battle of Austerlitz). The reverse and the edge are decorated with the emblem of the Great Army of Napoleon.

After Napoleon's invasion of Russia in June 1812, the Russian troops opposing him constantly retreated towards Moscow, avoiding a general battle. In August 1812, Russian Emperor Alexander I dismissed Mikhail Barclay de Tolly from the post of commander-in-chief and appointed Mikhail Kutuzov in his place, demanding that the latter prevent the French from taking Moscow. On September 3, the Russian army settled at Borodin, 125 km from Moscow, and managed to build field fortifications. The French offensive was delayed by the battle at the Shevardinsky redoubt on September 5. About 250 thousand people and 1,200 artillery pieces participated in the Battle of Borodino on both sides. The forces of the French and Russians were approximately equal. The battle lasted about 12 hours and is considered the bloodiest in the history of one-day battles. In the "battle of the giants", the sides suffered huge losses. The Russian army lost 50,000 men (primarily from massive artillery fire), and Napoleon's Grand Army lost about 35,000. The losses in killed, died of wounds, wounded and missing amounted to about a third of the composition of the opposing armies. The result of the general battle of the Patriotic War of 1812 was that Bonaparte failed to defeat the enemy army, and Kutuzov did not defend Moscow. After Borodin, the Russian army, whose morale had strengthened, quickly regained its strength and was ready to expel the enemy from Russia. Napoleon's Great army, on the contrary, lost heart, lost its former maneuverability and ability to win. Moscow became a real trap for her, and the retreat from it turned into an escape with the final tragedy on the Berezina. Of the half a million people who invaded Russia in June, only 10,000 managed to leave its territory in December.
