A glass paperweight is a heavy object designed to fix paper on a table and protect documents from accidental drafts or careless hand movement. It was invented by the Venetian glassblower Pietro Bigaglia in 1845.
After the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace in London, glass paperweights became even more popular. Today, they continue to be manufactured, but are more often used as decorative accessories, rather than cargo for pressing down important papers.
