This problem arose after the abolition of serfdom and the Great Reforms of Alexander II. The Narodniks were among the first to try to solve it. Considering the collective principle as determining, they subordinated the individual principle to it, the personality to society. A person had value only if he brought benefit to the team. The Narodniks considered socio-political activity to be the most effective. In it, a person had to reveal himself. The strengthening of the populist approach to man and his activities in society, which occurred in the 60s - 80s of the XIX century, led to the fact that literature, philosophy and art began to be viewed as a secondary phenomenon, less necessary compared to political activity.
