Ivan Alekseevich Bunin, a venerable member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1909), Nobel Prize laureate (1933), continued the traditions of the great Russian literature of the nineteenth century in the twentieth century. The pain for the destroyed patriarchal-noble Russia and the sense of the inevitable tragedy of human existence permeate Bunin's entire work.
The master's honed prose carries a huge charge of sadness, but the sadness is bright and not inconsolable, because it always tells about love. Love for a departed, changed Homeland, love for a deceived hope, love for a woman — about love as a property of the soul and the meaning of its existence..This volume includes short stories from 1892-1900, as well as poems from 1908-1915.
