A special genre of moral teaching, to which Domostroy belongs, is rooted deep in the past and is not native Russian, but is present in the medieval literature of many countries. The opportunity to clothe the rules of life in the form of "teaching, edification" made it easier to understand and accept the proposed strict norms of social and family life.
In its final form, Domostroy was formed under Ivan the Terrible. Its authorship belongs to the famous church and statesman of the XVI century, priest Sylvester. It was from his pen that this encyclopedia of family life, household customs, and traditions of Russian farming came out. "Domostroy" is divided into three parts: the first tells "about the spiritual structure" and contains rules of a religious nature, affecting the smallest details of spiritual life, which form an idealistic image of a "righteous life"; the second part, devoted to the "worldly structure", sets out a number of rules that must be followed in family life, how to deal with children and household members; the third part is devoted to the "house building" and is represented by many small instructions on household management. Of the three extant editions, the second, Sylvester's, has an additional 64th chapter, "Epistle and Instruction from Father to Son." It is also called the "Small House Building", because it includes the main "milestones" of the entire "House Building". It is believed that this is the only chapter written directly by Sylvester himself, otherwise he only streamlined the existing provisions of the "House Building".
For a long time, Domostroy was a victim of prejudice, as a result of which it became a symbol of almost intra-family tyranny in the eyes of people. And the epithet "Domostroevsky" has firmly established a negative assessment. However, few people know that encouraging physical influence on a guilty wife or child is a relic of the original texts of "Domostroy". Sylvester, in his editorial, sought to emphasize precisely the spiritual education of the individual, the development of virtues in himself, and the need for spiritual harmony in family life.
By publishing this book, we did not just want to present Domostroy as a collection of rules and advice concerning household items, but sought to convey the deep thought of this literary monument that human and family life should be based on the foundations of moral order - goodness, honesty and the fear of God. That is why today a person who has embarked on the path of self-improvement has something to learn from the well of the medieval "House Building".
