Shortly before this meeting, Thatcher was elected leader of the Conservative Party, and despite the fact that she essentially determined the direction of foreign policy for the conservative government, she was severely limited in her speeches in the House of Commons.
The Iron Lady decided that since "her voice did not carry much weight at home, she would be heard outside of it." Thatcher made visits across the Atlantic, maintaining international ties and promoting her economic and foreign policy. So, in 1975, she toured the United States and met with U.S. President Gerald Ford.
