We present to your attention the road chess set on magnets "Battle of Sinope". This battle, which ended in an undisputed victory for the Russian sailors, went down in history as the last major battle of sailing fleets, and the first large-scale battle involving steamships. This is one of the rarest examples in world history of the defeat of a naval base with a fleet stationed there as a result of an attack from the sea. With the victory in the Battle of Sinope, the Russian fleet gained supremacy in the Black Sea and thwarted Turkish plans to land troops in the Caucasus. The brilliant victory of Vice Admiral Pavel Nakhimov served as a kind of "trigger" for the outbreak of the Crimean War.
All the pieces in this set are divided into Russian (white) and Turkish (black) fleets. And each one is handmade on a magnet in the form of a miniature of a ship or naval commander.
The Russian Fleet:
The Pawn is a sailing gunboat with an 18-pounder gun mounted on the bow. A small vessel armed with 1-2 guns and designed for operations on rivers, in skerries, in the coastal zone. She could perform the functions of defending the coast and ports, fighting enemy troops and supporting the landing of her troops. It is very maneuverable and inconspicuous due to its size. It was practically invulnerable, as it was very difficult to hit it. Against the backdrop of huge battleships and proud frigates, she looked like a mouse in a stable, but she was a ferocious little beast!
Ladya is a Russian defensive fortress with cannons on the Black Sea coastline.
The Kulevchi frigate horse. The sailing three-masted 60-gun ship is named in memory of the victory of the Russian troops over the Turkish in the battle near the village of Kulevci.
The horse is the frigate "Cahul". Sailing 44-gun wooden ship. Its crew could include up to 375 people. During the Battle of Sinope, he drifted in the rear of the squadron to prevent attempts by Turkish ships to leave the bay. The frigate fired at the Turkish steamer Taif coming out of the bay, but due to the prevailing headwind, it was unable to pursue it, and the steamer managed to escape.
Elephant is the Odessa steamship frigate. A wheeled 12-gun ship, one of four ordered by Nicholas I of England.
Elephant — steamship frigate "Crimea". A wheeled 12-gun ship, one of four ordered by Nicholas I of England.
The Queen is the flagship of the Empress Maria. A sailing three-masted battleship, one of two of the Brave type. Ships of this type were the largest 84-gun ships in the history of the fleet. Their ship's crew consisted of 770 people. During the four hours of the Sinop Battle, the Empress Maria fired 2,128 rounds. Subsequently, the ship was depicted in paintings by I.K. Aivazovsky.
The king is a bust of Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov. The great Russian admiral served flawlessly in the navy for 40 years, conducted 34 naval campaigns. The Black Sea Fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Nakhimov epically defeated the Turkish squadron in the Battle of Sinop. After the Battle of Sinope, Emperor Nicholas I justifiably called P.S. Nakhimov the best admiral in history.
The Turkish Fleet:
Pawn is a sailing 2-gun gunboat. A small Turkish ship from the time of the Crimean War was widely used for protection in the coastal zone.
Ladya is a defensive fortress with cannons in the harbor of Sinop on the Black Sea coast of Turkey.
Horse — corvette "Feyze Meabud". The sailing 24-gun ship was washed ashore after a battle with the Russian battleship Rostislav.
Horse — corvette "Nezhm Fishan". Sailing 24-gun ship, one of the three sailing corvettes of the Turkish squadron under the command of Osman Pasha.
Elephant is a steamship frigate "Taif". A significant ship of the Battle of Sinope under the command of the Englishman Adolphus Slade, who held the position of Mushaver Pasha in the Turkish navy. The frigate had a crew of 320 people. With a strong artillery armament, this ship could provide great assistance to its squadron, but it did not even enter the battle, but went to sea and headed for the Bosphorus. It was the only Ottoman warship to escape the disaster.
Elephant — steamship frigate Pervaz-i Bahri. The Ottoman-Egyptian military steamer is the hero of the painting by Alexei Petrovich Bogolyubov. He became famous for his participation in the first ever battle of steam ships. It was captured by a Russian reconnaissance ship under the command of Kornilov just before the start of the Sinop battle.
The queen is the Nizamie frigate. Wooden sailing 63-gun ship. During the battle, the Russian battleship Paris shot down the foremast and mizzen masts of the Nizamiyeh frigate under the flag of Admiral Hussein Pasha, after which the ship washed ashore, where it soon caught fire.
The king is a bust of Admiral Patron Osman Pasha, commander of the Turkish Black Sea Fleet. After the defeat in the Battle of Sinope, he was captured wounded. Moreover, earlier he was robbed by his own sailors, who took off his outer clothes and took away the key to the cabin. He returned to his homeland only three years later (after the end of the Crimean War), forever leaving his personal weapon in Sevastopol — a broadsword, which can be seen today in the museum of the Black Sea Fleet.
