Vladimir Kramnik is a Russian chess player, the "classic" world champion in 2000-2006, the 14th FIDE World chess champion (2006-2007), the winner of the World Cup (2013).
In 2008, the World Chess Championship match between world champion Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik took place in Bonn from October 14 to October 29. The prize fund amounted to 1.5 million euros.
This match was the second match for the world championship after the unification of two lines of world chess champions — FIDE champions and "classical chess champions". In the first unification match, Vladimir Kramnik defeated Veselin Topalov and became the absolute world champion. Then, in September 2007, the next FIDE World Championship was held, in which Viswanathan Anand won. Thus, the 2008 match became a match in which Kramnik, as the 2nd runner-up in the 2007 championship, could regain the chess crown he had lost.
Part of the chess community viewed the match as a competition in which the "real" world champion would be determined (the vast majority of professional chess players believe that, despite all the innovations introduced by FIDE in the world champion title draw, only the one who defeated the previous champion in the match can be considered a true champion).
After 11 games, Viswanathan Anand achieved victory with a score of 6½ : 4½ and retained the title of world champion.
