The tabernacle is a sacred vessel in which the Holy Gifts are kept — the Body and Blood of Christ, used for communion. According to this purpose, it is the most sacred object in the Christian temple. Tabernacles are used in the services of the Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Anglican churches.
In Orthodox churches, the tabernacle is certainly kept in the altar on the throne and is called "kivot". In Orthodox churches in the Middle East, a special place in the altar is provided for the tabernacle. Modern tabernacles are usually designed as a miniature temple, inside which there is an ark with Gifts in the form of a casket or sarcophagus. The Holy Gifts kept in the tabernacle serve for the communion of sick or dying believers who are unable to come to the church for the liturgy.
The tabernacle should be distinguished from the tabernacle, which is an ark for the transfer of the Holy Gifts. It is used by a priest who goes to commune with someone outside the temple (for example, the sick).
