Chinese seismograph from Vanbo, Hong Kong. Art. KA08. The seismograph, invented by Zang Heng, a famous Chinese scientist during the reign of the eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 BC), can be considered the very first device that allowed determining the direction of the place where an earthquake occurs.
A ball is embedded in the mouth of each of the 8 gilded dragons, while one of them, falling into the open mouth of a gilded frog sitting under the dragon, indicates the direction in which the earthquake occurs. The ”Vintage Seismograph” manufactured by Vanbo, made of high-quality brass, an alloy of tin with lead and wood, has a certain historical value and can be used as a gift or collectible.
