THE STORY OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON is a book of amazing fate. The history of its publication in Russia is especially interesting. The publication of the book was timed to coincide with a great event for the French – the reburial of the ashes of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Published in Paris in 1839, the book went through many reprints and was translated into several European languages within a short time. In particular, it was published in Russia already in 1842. Such popularity is explained by the revival of interest in its main character – a great commander and charismatic ruler who glorified his country and became one of the symbols of France. The light style of presentation contributed to the enormous popularity of the book. A huge advantage of the publication is the magnificent illustrative series created by Horace Vernet. The description of all significant episodes is accompanied by beautifully executed emotional drawings. Each chapter is preceded by a story screen saver and a letter. All chapters end with endings.
