For the vast majority of Russian residents, such a metal as tin is not associated with the production of any artistic products. At the word "tin", the image of a persistent tin soldier from the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen arises in my thoughts. But in the British Isles, everything is completely different. For centuries, English and Irish craftsmen have created extraordinarily beautiful household items and souvenirs made of tin.
The widespread use of tin for the production of a wide variety of items, which takes place in Great Britain and Ireland, is primarily due to the fact that the British isles have huge reserves of ore, from which it is very easy to obtain pure metal. Tin-based alloys do not change their chemical characteristics when in contact with beverages and food, and therefore are ideal for making tableware. Tinware has enjoyed well-deserved love and respect among the inhabitants of foggy Albion for many centuries.
Nowadays, the Irish company Clearmont Pewter creates original souvenir products from pewter. The pewter is an alloy of tin with copper and antimony. In Europe, the pewter has long been called "British metal". At one time, the traditions of producing tin products were almost forgotten. However, in the middle of the twentieth century, a modern production arose in the Irish county of Leys, which managed to breathe new life into tin alloy.
One of the Clearmont Pewter company's areas of activity is the creation of gift gaming accessories. The Clearmon souvenir chess figures are also made of pewter. The white figures are decorated with gilding, the black ones with silver. The chessboard is created from an array of valuable wood.
