The Order is named after St. George the Great Martyr, the patron saint of the Orthodox army. The award was intended to distinguish officers for exploits on the battlefields.
On the obverse of the medal, in the foreground, there is a relief color image of the badge of the Order of St. George and behind it the star of the Order. At the bottom of the medal, a black and yellow ribbon of the order flutters under the order.
In the background there is an image of St. George the Victorious.
On the reverse side of the medal, in the foreground, there is an image of six of the most famous and highest awards of the Russian Empire. The coat of arms of the Russian Empire is depicted in the background, on which the coats of arms of the Russian kingdoms and grand duchies are located.
